ATP makes endergonic (nonspontaneous) reactions to occur spontaneously because ATP is exergonic itself so it couples itself with a nonspontaneous reaction so that the whole reaction is exergonic (spontaneous).One way in which ATP is made during cellular respiration comes from oxidative phosphorylation, in which the energy (in the form of an electrochemical gradient) released from redox reactions in an electron transport chain is used to produce ATP. It converts NADH and FADH2 from the citric acid cycle to ATP. Oxidative phosphorylation occurs in the final stage of cellular respiration.
