The Rocking-Horse Winner Symbolism Essay Big mouthfuls will only make someone choke, just as heavy pockets will make a man drown. Throughout D.H. Lawrence's The Rocking Horse Winner there are several symbols centered around greed. The story is based around a boy named Paul and his short life. On Christmas, Paul received a brand new rocking-horse, and he used it to wondrously predict the winner of the local horse races. Paul gambled his way to great fortune, yet there never seemed to be enough money for the family’s needs. He battled being unloved, and still his family used his winner-predicting talents for their dirty deeds. His mother also spent all of the pot in an impulsive manner. Symbolism was used to create an off putting and evil mood all the way from the beginning of the story. Each symbol has a way to portray this imitating, luxurious family for what they really are. The rocking-horse, the changing of Paul’s eyes, and luck are all symbols that result in Paul getting taken over by greed. The first symbol in this story is the rocking-horse. The horse is first introduced as “modern” and “shiny”, which undermines that there could be something dark and ominous about that Christmas gift.
