When causes are thought about, they are the wrong ones. Some may say that alcohol, outfits, or body language caused the action. All of these are excuses that should not be made. With one in five women being assaulted, how are college students supposed to feel comfortable? Sexual harassment happens on all college campuses, but is more common at bigger schools. People are not handling the crimes the way that they should be handled, instead the issue is being ignored. Sexual harassment should not be minimized, but it is. The blame is being placed on the wrong person, the victim should not be taking the blame. Instead of over sympathizing the victim, society tends to be over sympathetic towards the predator. Sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape all can have a major effect on women, especially women who are trying to figure out the future. Many young women struggle every day with finding self-confidence or power. Women that experience a traumatic event, such as these crimes, may struggle with finding self-confidence every single day. Instead of coming up with excuses for the cause, society needs to consider the effects that are happening. Sexual harassment can cause depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, or unwanted emotions. Female students are likely to feel: embarrassed, angry, less confident, afraid, and confused. During these hateful acts, many women feel hopeless or at fault. If alcohol is a factor then saying no or escaping the scene is a lot more difficult. Alcohol slows reaction time, meaning that pushing away from the predator is ten times more difficult. In some cases, the predator is larger than the victim, which makes escaping almost impossible.
