Napoleon is not only a military leader, but also a political leader. On 1799, Napoleon joins Sieyès and Roger Ducos to form a stronger executive of three consuls, and he chose men to replace seats in the Senate and the Council of state who thought was loyal to him (553). Eventually, Napoleon was made first consul, or the most powerful man in France. The citizens of France did not feel threatened when Napoleon was announced as first consul. It was most likely because Napoleon knew what the people wanted and gave it to them. He knew how to please people, and obtain what he wanted at the same time. After the French Revolution, the church was in ruins. The death of the Pope VI, Pope VII was next in line, but Pope VII was more eager to end religious …show more content…
The state would pay the clerical salaries, and the church abandoned the land that was sold as “national property”. Furthermore to appease the church, Bonaparte exempted the calendar of 1793 and made Saturdays and Sundays as religious holidays once again (554). Because of Napoleon, the church gained the freedom of religious practice and peace. However, Napoleon put some propaganda in the church. Whenever the question: “What are the duties of Christians with respect to the princes who govern them, and what are in particular, our duties toward Napoleon?” would appear, the church had to answer: “Love, respect, obedience, fidelity, military service… We also owe him fervent prayers for his safety and for the spiritual and temporal prosperity of the state” (554). In all fairness, Napoleon helped the church get peace and order. In return Napoleon gave some of his propaganda to the church. The steps to achieve peace are to go through chaos and disorder, followed by a strict follow-up. Not only that but Napoleon granted other religions to practice freely. Protestants, Jews, Calvinists, and Lutherans had state protection, even though together they made less than 5 percent of the French
