Estrus in Dogs (Heat Cycles)

General Information

The mating period of female dog is called estrus or heat, it is stage of the reproductive cycle of female dogs when they can become pregnant. Female dogs are called bitches.
During the year bitch usually have two season of mating in early summer and in late winter, but when we talk about dogs which are living in the houses heat can appear more than two times. The first estrus in the bitch appears at 6 months of age, but can vary by breed. Smaller breeds usually have first estrus earlier and giant breeds of dogs even when they rich the age of two. In estrus bitch allow male dog to mate with her. When you touch her back she stands still and moves the tail to the side the same happens when a male dog comes to her. Usually this stage last from 4 to 13 days.
Diestrus: This stage lasts about 2 months on average in which the bitch doesn’t permit mating. If the bitch is pregnant this stage will end with delivering puppies. In this stage estrogen level are low and progesterone is rising to decrease at the end of these phase.
Anestrus: This is time between one heat cycle to next and usually last six months. At this stage, the ovaries are inactive.

Important Points Concerning Estrus

Estrus lasts for 3 weeks on average, and if we do not want our dog to get mating it is the best to take care through hole these 3 weeks.
Sometimes the estrus runs without clearly visible signs such as bleeding and this can deceive us. Mother Nature doesn’t always follow the rules.
All these information above are general. Each dog is an individual therefore it is always necessary to consult a veterinarian if we notice some changes in our pet. Sometimes bitches cycling problems can lead to much serious health problem, so it is best that these problems are resolved in
