The events that took place in the West German Republic between 5 September and 18 October 1977, when the German terrorist organisation Red Army Faction (RAF) carried out terrorist actions with the purpose of forcing the government of the then Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) to release their imprisoned founding members, are known in contemporary German history as the German Autumn and represented the former West German Republic’s largest domestic policy challenge after the terrorist attack during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
