Deception is when someone lies or hides the truth and makes people believe something different. It can be a very powerful thing that can many times cause somebody to get into serious trouble. There are many reasons as to what drives someone to deceive others. It could be that they want something so badly that they are willing to do anything to achieve it, often thinking that lying will make it easier to achieve their goals. Other times it doesn’t necessarily have to be to gain money or anything valuable, but simply to feel accepted by society. People could try to be someone they are not thinking they are lying to others, but in reality they are deceiving themselves. She deceives him into thinking she is looking for her sister, but she must first talk to Floyd Thursby in order to see her. She asks Spade to follow Thursby and Miles Archer agrees to do the job, both thinking he would lead them to her supposed sister but really she’s hoping he would lead to where the bird was. By lying about it and not telling the seriousness of the situation, it was in part her fault that Archer died. Perhaps if she would have told the truth from the get-go Archer might have been more prepared. Once Spade learns who she really is and what she’s after, he tries to get her to the truth about everything. However, she only tells part of the truth and lies about everything else. Deceiving and lying can be a very dangerous thing especially when the one doing the lying can’t tell the difference between what a lie and what’s real. As one researcher said, “The theory further specifies that people who often attain their goals through lying will be more likely to continue to lie” (Van Brockstaele). Following this theory, an experiment was conducted in which the researchers concluded, “As such, lying may be just as easy or difficult as truth telling when people lie frequently or when lies are well-practiced… it suggests that people can train themselves to become practiced liars who will experience little if any difficulty when responding deceptively” (Van Brockstaele). This theory very well applies to Brigid. She even said it herself that she couldn’t tell difference between what’s a lie or not. “so tired of it all, of myself, of lying and thinking up lies, and of not knowing what is a lie and what is the truth” (Hammett 89).
