A unique poem by Poe is ‘Eldorado’. A man is on the search for El Dorado, the city of gold, but he grows old while searching. On his journey he meets a pilgrim who tells him if he wants to find El Dorado, he must go “over the Mountains of the Moon, Down the Valley of the Shadow”. Some gothic elements …show more content…
The Raven, being classically gothic in all of its ways, is a very interesting poem/story. Two of the many gothic elements that this story beholds is death. The death of Lenore has put her lover into a depression, and he has tried to forget it, but the Raven (His memory), won't let the thought of Lenore's Death go. “Wretch!’ I cried, ‘Thy God hath lent thee- By these angels has sent thee, Respite- respite and nepenthe from thy memories from Lenore!” Every time the man says something to the Raven, the Raven only answers- “Nevermore”, meaning Lenore will be here ‘Nevermore’. From reading more, the man asks the Raven where he came from. “Tell me what thy name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!” The Night's Plutonian Shore is probably hell, because Pluto in Roman mythology is the God of hell, and night is obviously darkness, what the man says probably means- “Tell me why you’ve come here from the dark shores of Hell!” Or maybe something like that. The Oval Portrait is a framework story- a story inside of a story. A man and his servant break into a chateau for the night because the man is injured. The room is very lavish and full of vignette portraits. He sees one portrait of a beautiful young woman and looks it up in the book that describes all of the pictures. The picture is of a very beautiful woman, whose husband was a painter. He was very fond of his work and painted all the time, much to his wife's dislike. One day, he decides to paint his wife. He spends hour after hour and day after day just painting ear, and trying to make everything perfect. She doesn't move at all, and is very still, and goes along with the plan, though she doesn't agree. One day, the husband finally finishes the picture. He was so in love with it, and when he finally looks over to see his wife, she is dead! One of the main gothic elements in this story is a damsel in distress. We see a stressed out female, being painted by her lover, even though she doesn't want to be. She finally dies after he finishes! This story is a very unique story too, because of the way it uses the gothic elements. You would never think being painted could put a damsel in distress, but in this story,Poe managed to make it happen!
Gothic elements are used in everyday stories, but Poe makes it more interesting than modern stories. Living how he did, I think I would've written like he did. I think he purpose
