The Raven And Hitchcock's Use Of Suspense

Great Essays
Suspense is the feeling when people do not know what will come next. Suspense is an idea of the unknown that is dragged on, and pushed back further and further. It leaves the mind wondering what if, while at the same time, slowly creeping into the mind's darkest fears. Suspense is important when writing gothic literature or thrillers because it enhances the fear factor within each genre of literature, making the story more interesting. Within the movie The Birds, Alfred Hitchcock uses many forms of disasters that create suspense. While in "The Raven", Edgar Allen Poe focuses mainly on the thoughts of the narrator. Poe and Hitchcock both use expectations and isolation to draw in the attention of their audience. Isolation plays a major part in …show more content…
Poe uses isolation by placing his narrator all alone in a chamber at midnight. "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore. While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, as of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door. Only this, and nothing more."' (Poe ln 1-6). The way that Poe purposefully mentions that it is a midnight dreary creates a mood of fear. This creates suspense by allowing the mind to wonder as to why someone is tapping on the mans door at midnight, because nothing good happens at midnight. Also, Edgar Allen Poe does not forget to strategically name the room that the narrator is in, his chamber. The term chamber is normally used while referring to a place of torture or darkness. However, by calling the room this, …show more content…
Thought is what the mind thinks about, and something that you may not say aloud. Poe uses thought very well throughout his poem. The entire poem is about the thoughts of the narrator, and his memories of Lenore. This creates suspense, because the constant worry of the narrator makes the readers also begin to worry and wonder. Everything that the main character is feeling, the readers are also feeling. Hitchcock does not use this term very well because he makes his audience to determine what the characters are thinking. While, Poe directly tells us through the thoughts of the narrator of "The Raven". Hitchcock uses disaster so well, that it leaves his audience in shock. He can use disaster over and over again, without his audience getting bored of it. Every time there is a disaster it is expected to happen at some time, but that time is unknown. For example, when the birds attack over and over again... The audience is fully aware that it will keep happening, but have no clue at what time exactly. This creates suspense, because it leaves the audience wondering what will happen next. Poe does not use disaster the wha that Hitchcock does. This is because Hitchcock uses actual things that happen that cause a disaster. While, Poe uses previous disaster. This is not at all the way that Hitchcock uses disaster. The way that each author uses disaster, and thoughts creates suspense in completely different ways. Suspense is created

He uses foreshadowing to hint at events in the future and make you wonder what is going to happen, which in return creates suspense. He uses foreshadowing when he kills pluto, the first cat. This hint at him getting into trouble later on by showing how is growing more and more crazy. Suspense, a noun, is “a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.” Suspense gives you adrenaline and a feeling that has you flying like you are on some roller coaster that is taking you high into the sky, with a large, quick plummet down to the bottom. Suspense like that is important to a story because it keeps the reader on their toes and makes them want to continue to read. To create this, authors can use conflict, irony, and foreshadowing in their stories. To begin, in the Rights to the Streets of Memphis, the author, Richard Wright, uses conflict to create suspense in the text.…

Movies, books, and short stories all create and utilize suspense in many different ways, shapes, and forms. From the tension and worry feeling shown in movies, to foreshadowing about what will happen in literature. Author Daphne du Maurier and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock both used many ways to create suspense in their takes on the horror story, “The Birds.” However, only one author utilized suspense the best. Between du Maurier’s short story and Hitchcock's film, Hitchcock’s film did a better job of creating and utilizing suspense with the use of the element of sound, camera angles used in scenes, and the emotion shown through the actors/characters.…

To begin with, Poe creates suspense in the play, but one of the ways he creates this mood is the setting and time. He states that it's dark at midnight, stating this early in the poem already gives off a suspenseful vibe. It most cases, being in the dark at midnight is very creepy. Moving on, he states that it's in December, but describes December as a bleak December which means cold and miserable. Stating that it was cold and miserable has the reader wondering…

Poe’s story is filled with imagery; beginning with the description of “the eye of a vulture – a pale blue eye, with film over it,” and ending with the sound of “the beating of the old man’s heart,” he uses imagery to paint the readers a picture (1-2). By being specific and using sensory words, Poe is able to give the readers a visual of what is occurring. The most obvious use of imagery and perhaps the most effective is Poe listing the steps he took each night for a week in preparation for the murder. By doing this Poe makes the reader feel as if they are experiencing this event alongside the narrator. This feeling is heightened when Poe, in addition to imagery, uses short choppy sentences which help create a mood of suspense.…
