Many of the movements were consist on an optimistic faith and human nature. They had free expression of imagination and feelings. This was know as a belief that within every individual rested a spirit that was good and the society could unleash. This assumption was commonly accepted as romanticism, which was generated in both Europe and America. Romanticism was displayed in literature, philosophy, art, and even politics and economics. American intellectuals committed themselves to the liberation of human spirt. Washington Irving 's, tale called Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Doc 4) opens with a evocative description that gives off the rich and graceful region of the Hudson River Valley in the early 1800s. They had a growth of compulsory state funding education schools called common schools. Education reformer Horace Mann helped that this would give poor students moral character and body of knowledge to compete with upperclass kids (Doc 6). Europe felt that they were alone in the center of the artistic world but paintings within the U.S became popular because they felt they had there own wonder of the nations landscape and had power of nature
