The Role Of Racism In Society

Improved Essays
Racism has always been the most highly discussed issue in society. America continues to encounter and face many racial problems from the Civil Rights movement until now. Dalton Conley (2011) discusses Social Darwinism and how it was the notion that "some groups or races had evolved more than others and were better fit to survive and even rule other races". The cultural relativism should be promoted to help people understand that no race is superior or better than another. However, many believe that black people will never gain full equality in America regardless of the many improvements. The demand to shut out the racial past is not a new attitude for many Americans, often times, these racial categories were ranked in order of superiority, …show more content…
These are in fact composed of actions, habits, and personal beliefs. White supremacy can be classified as simply white racism. To sum it up, white supremacy is the belief that the white race is superior to any other race regardless of that individual 's wealth, health, etc. Similarly we could say that white supremacy is an organization of power. White supremacy and economic power were born together. Society tends to value most white people more than any other race, which exemplifies the term white privilege. According to Jennifer Holladay (2000)," white privilege shapes the world in which we live-the way that we navigate and interact with one another and with the world", which demonstrates that the source of power is not something that white people necessarily do or create but still exhibits. One form of the power of white supremacy is the power to oppress, control, demoralize, and destroy people of color. Another form of the power of white supremacy is the power to provide power and privilege to those who are identified as being white. White fear has demonstrated itself in so many different ways that it has become part and parcel with the fundamental functions of every private and governmental organization in this country. White supremacy leads to fear of people of color. Fear of slave revolts. Fear of loss of political power as in the time of Reconstruction. Fear of declining property values when neighborhoods change. Fear of losing social capital as in integrated education. Fear that whites will become a “minority” in the United States by the year 2050. The fears created by white supremacy lead to a desire for control. The control of the patrol and overseer, the control of the KKK and Knight Riders, the control of black institutions and ghettos, the control of prisons and loss of voting rights for people of color who have been in prison. Since slavery, the misconception of the dangerous black man has been used to implant the fear in whites and to account for their cruelty against black individuals and possibly other races. In conclusion, the thing that causes some white people to believe they are superior than other races, especially blacks, can be the fear that they no longer are superior which causes them to exert it

White supremacy is defined as being “a historically positioned and institutionally embedded system of exploitation of people of color across the diaspora rooted in the premise that individuals who are racially-classified as ‘White’ are inherently superior to individuals who are non-White”, it also is a comprehensive condition whereby interests and observations of White subjects are continuously placed center stage and assumed to be “normal”. This causes whites in America to have an overwhelming control of power and resources, which enforces their unearned privileges and the oppression of people of color. White supremacy is maintained in four ways in the US. One way white supremacy is supported is by the increasing number of killings of unarmed African Americans by white police officers; this can be looked at as a parallel to when blacks were enslaved, castrated, whipped, maimed, and lynched, which was used frequently in the South as a method of policing the activities of African American men from 1880-1950. Juries denying the humanity and victimization of blacks also help to maintain white supremacy, since the jurors are mostly whites in most trials they share the same views of blacks that the police officers that are trial have, which severely minimize the chance of the officers being indicted.…

Throughout Ta-Nehishi Coates’ text Between the World and Me and Tim Wise’s book White Like Me, the concept of white privilege is discussed heavily as the source of racial tension. White privilege can be defined as the advantages white people have over people of color in all aspects, including economic, social, and political. Evidence from history proves the treatment black people receive from law enforcement differentiates from white people, and this is still an issue today despite the equality all races are supposed to have. Looking back at America’s past, policy brutality is present and abundant. Before the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans did not even have the same rights as whites because whites were the “superior race.”…

Starting in the year 1865, post-Civil War, Texas begins to rebuild its economic, social, and political order under the new federal laws regarding emancipation. The shift from a plantation economy with power held by the land owners calls for a “redefinition of the relationship between blacks and whites.” Whites southerners, rejecting the shift from antebellum life, use violence to maintain white supremacy by forming rebellions under organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. Such organizations eventually force the national government to withdraw its defense of blacks and sympathize with the white elites.…

Eric, The topic of white privilege is a challenging subject to discuss. White privilege represents the benefits that white individuals receive from society that people of color will not. I agree with your three elements in the knapsack of white privilege not listed by Peggy McIntosh, especially the one about when getting pulled over by a cop you don’t have fear about your life. That is a very imperative especially what has been happening lately in our society with the how the police are treating people of color unlawfully.…

Privilege is a right, advantage, favor, or immunity specially granted to a specific individual, group, or class, and withheld from certain or all others. White privilege is a form of social privileges that solely benefits white people and excludes people of color. For some apparent reason many people become blinded, ignorant, and oblivious when white privilege becomes the topic of conversation. “White Privilege is the other side of racism” (Rothenberg, 53). Although we live in a country where we are constantly told all men are created equal, there is an overt contradiction to the ideology simply because of conspicuous white privileges.…

In this society whiteness is considered to be the norm, and everyone else second. Throughout history the white race has been put before any other group of people. In a article titled “ The matter of whiteness ” by Richard Dyer he states, “As long as race is something only applied to non white people, as long as white people are not racially seen and named, they / we function as a human norm” (p.10). For example, whites consider themselves as humans and see people of color as raced humans. One other problem with the invisibility of whiteness is that whites tend to cater to other whites.…

White privilege exists in almost every function of daily life from education, housing, finances, and even healthcare. Education, no child left behind, a right for all American youth, none of these things advertise that the best educators are saved for the white students. Mortgage lenders request that the “race” box be checked, only to discriminate, offering higher interest rates to minorities, and approving loans only in “minority” neighborhoods, usually those with lower property values consisting of low quality education, high crime and poor environmental awareness. In these lower class neighborhoods, quality healthcare is unavailable or severely inconvenient, while the white neighborhoods enjoy highly educated doctors, hospitals and clinics at every corner. Somewhere in our cultural unconscious lies the image of the brutal, animalistic, sexual savage.…

In the book The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, George Lipsitz explains the psychological brainwash of superiority of the white man using the term whiteness. According to Lipsitz, “The power of whiteness depended not only on white hegemony over separated racialized groups, but also on manipulating racial outsiders to fight against each other, to compete with each other for white approval, and to seek the rewards and privileges of whiteness for themselves at the expense of other racialized populations.” (Lipsitz,…
