Ultrasound is a method of creating the best possible images to assist the Radiologist in the diagnosis of a patients pathology. This process occurs through sound waves. These sound waves have a frequency that is far beyond what humans can hear, although using these sound waves we are able to transmit ultrasound energy into the patient. Once the energy is inside the patient the structures reflect and distribute the sound which creates an echo. This echo is what allows us to produce an image of the structures of concern within our patients. Diagnostic ultrasound is a very complex procedure which leads us to wonder is it safe. ALARA is an acronym that means as low as reasonably achievable. This technique is used to protect patients by giving the sonographer control over the strength of the ultrasound. By aiming to use the lowest possible strength the sonographer keeps this in mind through out the entire procedure. In general the TI and MI values should always be monitored and always began in the lowest possible setting. Knowing that heat is an issue if a patient already has an elevated temperature then minimizing scan times should be a priority. Ultrasound is meant to be used for diagnostic purposes, and with that in mind it should not be used for producing souvenir photos or videos because this could cause harm that is unnecessary. This includes the training required for educational purposes, frequent and repeated exposure can cause harm and should be avoided. Sonographers should always know the FDAs rules, and they should be educated on the newest most adequate techniques, as well as any new equipment that is produced. They should always know the acceptable limits for all age groups for any of the values that are
