By law it is stated that no one under the age of 16 years of age is able to obtain a driver’s license. For that reason the majority of teens look forward to turning 16 so they can get their driver 's license and start their independent life. Myself, like my teenage friends were beyond excited that we were finally able to get our driver’s license and be able to go out without having our parents drop us off everywhere. A couple of my friend’s parents bought them brand new cars as a gift for passing the driving test, but their excitement didn’t last. They crashed their new cars, whether it be into a trash can, into another parked car or got in a really bad car accident. Increasing the legal driving age from 16-years-old to 18-years-old will decrease the high rate of deaths among teens due to driving accidents. Teenagers nowadays are gradually becoming less and less responsible drivers. They do what they think is right in the moment and never think of what the outcome might be. In most cases, they end up dead or mentally traumatized from what happened. For example, “Car accidents are the chief cause of death and disability among teenagers,with teens being killed at four times the rate of adults” (Lyon,L). Teenagers tend to think about how cool they’re going to look in front of their friends and most often show off, which almost always turns out to be bad news. Some do not wear seat belts for some unacceptable reason and their parents end up with one less child. Like the GHSA Report stated that “More than half of teen drivers killed during 2012 were not wearing one.” Seat belts are in the car to ensure safety to the driver and the passengers, they should’ve been taught to always wear seatbelts when in the car and that is wrong coming from the parents. Teenagers are risky drivers who need to be more focused on the road and less on who thinks they’re cool or not. Staying focused on the road while driving can be a bit tricky for a lot of teenagers, especially with all of the technology that is out there. BMC Public Health stated that, “Cell phones are a well-known source of distraction for drivers, and owing to the proliferation of text messaging services, web browsers and interactive apps, modern devices provide ever-increasing temptation for drivers to take their eyes off the road.” Cell phones are a very dangerous device to be near a teenage driver, they want to check who messaged them at the very moment they receive the message, check social media accounts, emails, take a selfie while driving. It is the scariest thing being in a car full of people and the driver is on their cell phone while driving. The young lady driving the car kept saying not to worry about it and that she had done it many times before, which was not relieving at all.Moments like that are the reasons teenagers should not be able to obtain a driver’s license when they are sixteen. Parents unlike their teenagers worry, a lot about their newly licensed teen driving around without them in the car. There are parents who want their children to go out and learn how to become independent and there are those who are overprotective, strict, uneasy about everything their teen does. For those strict parents, American Journal of Public Health says that “ many parents impose modest restrictions on their teenaged children when they become licensed, and such parental restrictions have been found to be negatively associated with risky driving among young drivers.” Parents who are strict are usually

At the age that teenagers get a license, they aren’t as mature as if they were to get their license after they graduated high school. They would be more mature and going off to college, where there would be a lot of responsibilities to keep up with. Unfortunately teenagers do not realize that they are in the wrong until it is too late. There may be times where they take their own life and don’t have the chance to realize that what they did was wrong.
