What many people believed in both the United States and Japan was that once the Soviets began their attack it would be decisive that the war would come to a quick close. Stalin made an agreement with Truman that he will declare war on Japan on August 15th, but the bombs were dropped on the 6th and the 9th. Both countries knew that the Soviets would completely overpower the japanese soldiers, but why couldn't the United States wait 9 days. The argument would be that the United States should attack before the Soviets get involved because they’ll try to swallow up as much land as they can and America doesn’t want Stalin to achieve greater power. President Truman wasn’t prepared to be president, didn’t understand the consequences for his actions, didn’t hold on to his authority, and was influenced to greatly by James Byrnes. Byrnes forced his opinion on Truman where he sheltered him from outside sources. This happened when Szilard sent a petition to Truman about his concern with the bomb along with 69 other scientists on the Manhattan Project begging him to not use it. As talked about earlier the timing of the bombs being dropped showed that Truman wasn’t ready. When the first bomb was dropped Truman was pushed by the rest of the advisors to drop it and then before Japan could even acknowledge the first bomb being dropped they dropped another, not allowing Japan to surrender, but instead dropping another mass killer on
