The Pros And Cons Of Thalidomide

Decent Essays
1. Thalidomide is a drug that can be used to treat insomnia, nauseas during pregnancy, certain cancers, ulcers in AIDS patients, and leprosy. The controversy regarding thalidomide is that it causes some pretty severe birth defects. The drug first came out in the 1950s and was wildly used in Europe. However, in the US its use was stopped by Frances Kelsey of the FDA. She said that the drug’s safety was not known and despite pressures to allow it in to the US she kept it at bay. Today, the FDA still has severe restrictions on the drug’s use, but it has been found that in some situations it can be helpful, such as in the treating of leprosy. Right now, only one drug company is manufacturing it, so is extremely expensive.
