In Steven Levy’s “The AI Revolution is on” he talks about the robots and their effective work. Levy says “Kiva bots may not seem very smart. They don’t possess anything like human intelligence and certainly couldn’t pass a turning test (Steven Levy 1596).” This can be linked to John Searle’s comments about Watson. The Kiva bots do not know what they are doing, because they are just following a system that was designed for them. Regardless if they possess the knowledge or not, the kiva bots are able to get their job done. These bots work in a diaper warehouse, where they deal with diapers, pacifier, and onesies. The setup of the warehouse is that so it can fit the needs of the robots. Bots make their way down aisles and pick up packages that are ready to go out. They then deliver it to a human. Kiva systems are set up popular merchandise, the geography of the warehouse, and the location of the bots (Levy 1596). Levy says that “…the system can deliver items to packers at the rate of one every six seconds.” Instead of trying to re-create the human brain, the system uses machine learning, massive data sets, sophisticated sensors, and clever algorithms (Levy 1596). New research could to lead to more advanced robots that could make their way in to offices and hospitals. Humans could be working right alongside a robot in years to come. After production robots are doing well on their own. Scientists are able to program a robot or computer to do a certain job. Some may possess a high amount of knowledge and some may possess a program that help them get job done. Robots and computers are able to function without the assistance of a human once they have their program in. Jastrow says “Computer intelligence is growing by leaps and bounds, with no natural limit in sight (Jastrow 1594).” This leaves no boundaries for the expansion of technology. Jastrow also says “ultra- intelligent machines will be working in partnership our best minds on all the serious problems of the day (Jastrow 1594).” This partnership may require a high amount of intelligence on both ends. Which would require robots and computers to become almost human like. Having a partnership with humans would require robots to be able to function without human help. Scientists used to fear the thought of artificial intelligence, but now they use it in their everyday lives (Levy 1598). Many may be frightened by the thought of working alongside robots, but some are seeing it as an opportunity to grow. Many people believe for a computer to grow to an almost human like figure they must get past the process of just following a system.
