Should Parents Hit Their Children Who Misbehave?
Discipline v. Child Abuse

Spanking, or, “corporal punishment,” has been on my mind as of lately, if you are a parent who spanks you are an “ abusive, sick, power, hungry, monster”, I heard someone say once. But how? If my child went to school and disrespect his/her peers and his teachers he/she will know what is going to happen, I’m not going to try to be their friend to talk it out just so it can happen again. Three years ago there was a lot of misplaced outrage from people who, were talking about the misconduct of professional athletes and they stuffed them in a campaign against child abuse.
I recently watched a video of a kid who not only yelled at his mother but slapped her too and she

Why don't the people who are worked up over the fact that Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was arrested 3 years ago on a felony charge of “child abuse” just examine what happened. According to a police report, Peterson disciplined his son after the boy pushed another one of Peterson's sons off of a motorbike video game. The Vikings running back used a switch (a thin branch or rod used for whipping) to discipline his child. I mean yes, there child did get bruised but it wasn’t his intent to bruise his son but teach what he did wasn’t right(Not that bruising a child is right but it was a side effect). Don’t get me wrong I am against child abuse, that’s a horrible crime to mistreat a child without reason, but if my child was misbehaving in any way they have to know what they did is not ok and they will be …show more content…
So things like disciplining their children, instilling values, influencing behavior and teaching them right from wrong went out the window when they started being friends and not parents. Now the kids run things. These pint size brats of the household tell their parents what to do, instead of the other way around. If mom and dad forget their place, princess will simply throw a few tantrums and scream: " I hate you!". I'm not telling anything you don't already know. If it's not happening in your house, it's happening in your brother's or cousin's or

Spanking has been an effective way for parents to reprimand their children if they misbehave or act inappropriately. Until recently, spanking has been a culturally acceptable form of punishment for children between the ages of one to five. In fact, 65% of 3-year-old children had been spanked within the last month (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2017). However, many disagree with the idea of spanking their children, due to the fact that it may cause more aggressive behavior. Instead of spanking, people have turned to a warmth parenting style which includes “affection, comfort, concern, nurturance, support, and good old fashioned love (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2018) .”…

Many communities, including the black community to which Peterson belongs, are rooted in the practice of administering harsh physical punishment with children or corporal punishment. As Michael Eric Dyson asserts “Beating children has been a depressingly familiar habit in black families since our arrival in the New World. ” When Adrian Peterson was charged with “reckless or negligent injury to a child” there were mixed opinions coming from the public and sports world(Dyson). Some, like the sports commentator and retired professional basketball player, Charles Barkley, view his acts as an satisfactory cultural tradition in punishment that has been passed down by generations of parents in the southern christian community(Meyers). Peterson 's public battle to be cleared of the charges of abuse and to be allowed reinstatement to the NFL have proved to be a catalyst in the fiery debate over what constitutes child abuse.…

This is proof that the NFL was trying to reduce violence and injuries, but this still not does not seem to work for reducing them. People let their kids go out and play the sport while they are potentially risking serious head injury, like concussions, which is very concerning to the child's parents, because of all the news and facts they know about concussions. If the NFL, or the equipment makers for the football players, came together to work for good equipment that caused less injuries, then this would save money and damage for the football player. These injuries leave people wondering “Will concussions ever be prevented or reduced in percentage throughout the years of football”? Or “What are sports medical teams doing to prevent concussions or make helmets more concussion-proof”?…

Football is high-monetary value business. Children are getting banned from football until a certain age, and rules are changing for some of the younger leagues to prevent head injuries. The NFL has acknowledged the relationship between football and head injuries, and are a part of the research as they are settling in the courts with the plethora of lawsuits. The only question left up to date is if the NFL is really sorry, or if they are sorry that they got caught. For many of them, money is always going to be the main goal.…

The NFL has made the illusion of caring about player safety by doing the bare minimum which is just putting medical professional on the field and passing no real bans or limits on collisions. As a matter of fact, the Florida High School Athletic Association has made more progressive contact limits in football such as: live contact during practices being limited to a maximum of three days a week and contact not being allowed for more than two consecutive days (Barnett). This does not prevent players from rushing back onto the field when they are hurt, as they feel the need to resist and deny pain due to peer pressure from their coaches, sponsors, and their fan base. By creating the illusion that they care about player safety by hiring medical professionals with perhaps a minute amount of their funds, they quiet down potential opposition, however, any real efforts to directly address the problem being a lack of education is ignored. “Stein convened a summit about concussions in 1994 and issued an explanatory paper on concussions awareness and prevention, which circulated among 32 teams and the NFL office but it was ignored” (Clarke).…

In disciplining children, parents should do everything as kindly and gently as they can first. They should try to understand a child, make sure the child understands what is expected of them, use reasoning and find an adequate nonphysical consequence, like a "timeout" or taking away privileges. But if the child won't cooperate, some kids — at least some of the time — need something more forceful to back it up. b) Establishes Respect Many kids who grew up getting spank by their parents are more respectful to adults c) Disciplinary Tool When used correctly, spanking is safe and effective, and can be an appropriate tool for parents.…
