Oxidation can be stated as the technology which converts petrochemical supplies to materials which has higher oxidation state. However, this process causes many problematic issues due to its many drawbacks. In chemical industry, nitric acid is the most common industrial oxidant (Noyori, Aokib and Satoc, 2003). Nitric acid has been used for many years as an oxidant. It has the characteristics to ionise readily in a solution. Nitric acid can react with metals, hydroxides, and oxides. (Frane, Herber and Knowles, 2015). Since Nitric acid is a powerful oxidant, it can react with non- metallic compounds and cause explosion contingent on the temperature, concentration, and reducing agent (Nitric acid, 2015). Even though nitric acid is relatively inexpensive to use as an oxidant, it can produce various nitrogen oxides. Nitrogen oxides can be harmful for ecosystem and human as it has cynical impact on these two. Moreover, NOx can have significant Greenhouse effect causing depletion of ozone layer. Therefore, it cannot be considered as clean, safe oxidation process (Noyori, Aokib and Satoc, 2003). …show more content…
Catalyst used for this particular process was copper/vanadium [Cu(0.1-05% & V (0.02-0.1%)]. Nitric acid was the oxidiser in this process. This process has been referred to as the “old” traditional process. This process will be compared with ‘greener’
