Lately, in the last two decades, legalizing marijuana has been a topic of debate around the United States. Washington, Colorado, Alaska and Oregon are states that have legalized the distribution and use of marijuana, for medical and recreational purposes. Cities such as Portland and South Portland in Maine, and Keego Harbor in Michigan have legalized marijuana. Contrary to the legalization, people still believe that marijuana is bad and that it is just a drug to make a person lazy and overeat. The pros for marijuana can outweigh the cons, mainly because there are more and more needs for marijuana; whether it helps with period cramps, seizures, or anxiety. History of Marijuana

THC affects the brain by blocking memory formation and distorts balance. With memory formation being blocked, it affects the part of the called known as the hippocampus, which also affecting balance. THC can also affect the increase of depression among the users the longer a person uses it. It’s not too bad though, THC releases a chemical called dopamine when it reaches the brain; it touches “the brain’s reward system (Insider) causing the person using marijuana to feel good. Also, with the use of the chemical THC, it controls epileptic seizures. “Robert J. DeLorenzo of Virginia Commonwealth University gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. (Insider)” In his study, DeLorenzo noticed that it stopped the rats from having seizures for 10 hours. The chemical THC in marijuana stops the seizures by binding to the brain cells that control the excitability and regulate relaxation.
Marijuana is classified as one of the most commonly used, but illicit, medicinal drugs in the United States. The chemical CBD, or cannabidiol, has the same properties as THC, but doesn’t make the person high. Positive side effects of CBD can include: reducing nausea, suppresses seizure activity, helps kill cancer cells, and alleviates anxiety and depression
