In 2003 the Genetics and IVF Institute began offering PGD for “family balancing,” that is allowing parents to choose the sex of their child. Prior to the availability of PGD, prospective parents had to rely on “natural” techniques to try to influence the sex of their child. Adolf Hitler (1819-1945) was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, and was the leader of Nazi Germany from 1934-1945. Nazi social policies were heavily influenced by the eugenics movement (Nazi Eugenics, 1). The Nazi’s first eugenics policy, the Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily-Diseased Offspring, was passed in July, 1933 (Nazi Eugenics, 1). The law required German doctors to identify all genetically-related illnesses in all patients except for women over the age of 45 (Nazi Eugenics, 1). Eugenics was ideal for Hitler’s policies because he wanted to create a master race by eliminating individuals with “undesirable” traits. Hitler’s “Final Solution” was to establish concentration camps to eradicate Jews and other groups that he deemed a threat to Aryan supremacy. It is estimated that the Final Solution resulted in the deaths of more than 6 million
