The Pros And Cons Of Fertilized Eggs

Improved Essays
Are we ready for an America made one quarter of genetically abnormal persons? Yet, this is how America will be, if fertilized eggs are given legal personhood. Fertilized eggs are single celled embryos which are incapable of survival on their own. Granting them legal personhood will be against the interests of humanity. It will invariably politicize the matter, interfere with research that can potentially revolutionize healthcare, deprive men and women of the right to choose the fate of their sex cells, and drive up healthcare costs on a logarithmic scale. A fertilized egg, also called zygote, is formed by union of male and female sex cells. It is a single cell, not capable of surviving on its own. In fact, even a fetus with a heart and other internal organs, formed after thousands of divisions of the original zygote, is incapable of survival on its own, even with the most advanced respiratory and other medical support, till 20 weeks of pregnancy. Thus, assuming that a zygote is a person, is mixing facts with fiction. It is like mixing mythology and history. It is like claiming that Adam and …show more content…
Abortion is already a political issue today, with many states having strict regulations opposing it. In fact, in 2016, Texas went so far as to pass a regulation requiring cremation or burial of fetal remains. In such a political climate, if fertilized eggs are granted legal personhood, it would pave the way for women eventually losing their right to birth control since birth control includes methods such as morning-after pill that prevent implantation of fertilized eggs. It will also undermine the right of a woman to decide to terminate a pregnancy after implantation, regardless of the origin of the pregnancy (which would be relevant in cases of rape) and regardless of the fertilized egg being known to have genetic

Every unborn child should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the second and third trimester. In 2010, research shows that states indicated that unborn children are considered humans under tort, property and criminal law (Roden, 2010). By these laws shown, a mother shouldn’t get to choose whether the fetus lives or dies. The unborn child is its own person and by a mother aborting her own child should be considered murder. Under law a child is supposed to be born for many different reasons, including being capable of having a legacy (Roden, 2010).…

The Pioneering of IVF It is amazing to know that there are people who were born into the world unnaturally. It may seem odd, but there are people who were once a test tube baby. The term test tube baby came from the late Dr. Edwin Carl Wood. Dr. Wood played an important role in the process of developing and commercializing the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) technique which has molded society into accepting the process of a scientifically fabricated child.…

World State, I hesitantly greet you. Transported from the past, I was welcomed with new scientific discoveries and societal ideas, but these innovations trouble me greatly. Although I whole-heartily support the motto "Community, Identity, Stability," your methods of achieving such a worthy motto are cynical. Yes, this includes Bokanovsky’s Process, a horrific scientific method that takes one fertilized egg and aggressively forces it to divide into ninety-six identical buds. The future children and citizens of your nation are dumped into alcohol, bombarded with harsh X-rays for eight minutes, and expected to survive such fatal procedures while being kept in incubators.…

These words get tossed to those who are towards the movement of pro-choice and not “pro-life”. Abortion is a topic that has been discussed time and time again, but rightfully so. Presidential candidates are often asked about their stance on the abortion issue and it is a topic that can greatly affect their votes. It is hard to admit that one considers themselves to be part of the pro-choice movement when such negative words are often used to describe them. Not even dreaded politicians should have the feeling to succumb to neutrality on the issue because of harsh viewpoints from society.…

However, abortion and birth control are not only the issues in reproductive rights. A new layer in the discussion of reproductive rights that evolve with the development of technology is surrounding surrogacy and the picking and choosing of certain traits. The Assisted Human Reproduction Act deals with this very new phenomenon and bans the fabrication of human embryos for research, creation of human and non-human hybrids, the alteration of human DNA. In more detail the act as Sullivan suggests, “distinguishes between two kinds of embryos: "reproductive embryos," which qualify as almost human life and cannot therefore be bought and sold, and "replicative embryos," whose potentiality is not in producing life but in producing health benefits and which may therefore be inserted into a system of economic exchange” (cite). Additions to the movement of reproductive justice such as these exposes that even with the progress that has occurred from earlier generations, there is more discussion that needs to happen and advances that need to be made.…

In essence, there are many arguments to surrogate motherhood, but it has the potential to empower women when they are given authority over their bodies, and what they want to do with it. If what a woman chooses to do with her body involves bearing a baby for another who cannot, then who is to say “no” to infertile couples, homosexuals, and single individuals that deeply desire a child. Regardless of how the baby was conceived, the attention should be focused on if they are raised in a happy and healthy living environment with a family that…

Many people tend to focus their argument on the life of the fetus without putting no value to the life of the mother. Personhood is the condition of being an individual person, aware of self, and be able to think. Fetus does not have consciousness, cannot think, and is dependent to the mother, therefore, it is not constitute as a person. The Fourteenth Amendment of the US Constitution does not include the unborn as a person. Every choice we make in life comes with a decision which is governed by individual rights.…

That is where our world might be in just a few short years if “designer babies” does not get stopped. There are researchers who are trying to get it legalized and people who have already had designer babies themselves. Designer babies should be illegal in the future because it is taking In Vitro Fertilization too far, it is unethical, not always reliable, and parents can have children without choosing their specific characteristics.…

Worldwide, approximately 42 million abortions occur per year that’s approximately 115,000 per day. In the United States, 1.21 million abortions occurred in the year of 2005, which roughly comes out to be 3 per day (4). Moreover, 1% of all abortions occur because of rape or incest, 6% of abortions occur because of potential health problems with either the mother or the child, and 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (4). Ending an unborn baby’s life is not constituted by choice—no, it’s constituted by deliberate murder. First and foremost, slaughtering an unborn baby via abortion is wrong because an unborn baby is still biologically considered a human being.…

Mark Ruffalo once said, “There was no mistake in us making abortion legal and available on demand. That was what we call progress. Just like it was no mistake that we abolished institutional racism in this country around the same time.” We have came a long way since the 1973 Roe vs. Wade court case which ruled abortions legal, but there is still a lot of nationwide discourse on the subject. America as a country made the vote to legalize abortion more than four decades ago for many reasons such as overpopulation, the mother's well being, and for the fact that the decision should be left to woman carrying the child.…

Do people consider a fetus to be a human or just an egg that has not yet fully evolved into one? When speaking of a fetus legally it is considered to be another member to society. The second a fetus is fertilized it has the right to life. Though abortion has not yet been banned, laws still have some sort of involvement when women decide to undergo abortion. Abortion is one of the most complex situation when falling into the prolife/prochoice debate.…
