Fighting Against Tyranny

The United States of America has prevented against tyranny since 1787 when the constitution was adopted and signed. Since then, systems such as federalism, separation of power and checks and balances have worked together to guard against tyranny by allowing independence and collaboration of state governments as well as preventing a certain branch of government of gaining too much power. Before the United States created the constitution, patriots fought for the independence of America through the American Revolution. War impacts economy tremendously and therefore many americans struggled to survive during the revolution. Federalism in the U.S constitution is the idea that governmental power is divided up between the branches of the united states, and the government of individual states. The national government powers that were presented in the constitution are referred to as delegated powers or enumerated powers (Danzer 68) The national government is responsible establishing national laws and enforcing them where as state government is responsible for issuing drivers licenses, establishing local governments as well as in state laws. However their power overlaps with being able to collect taxes, build roads, borrow money, establish courts, create and enforce laws, spend money for general welfare, and have the ability to charter banks and corporations. (“Powers of the Government” 1) By distributing powers between state and national governments, no part of the government has absolute power and therefore cannot make all decisions impacting the citizens of the United states. Federalism aids in guarding against tyranny because with the separation of power, there is no way for cruel and oppressive rule of governing to occur. Growing up, I believed that president of the United States was given ultimate power in the white house and made all decisions regarding the governing of the unites states. However after reading further into the constitution, it is evident that congress is given much more power than the president has. This seems to be something that is overlooked, especially in this years presidential election. After Donald Trump was nominated president, there was a lot of controversy about the role he would play as the president of the united states and the decisions he would make for our nation. There have been countless videos and comments made regarding Trump kicking out people in the Unites States who are not citizens. For example, the washington post said, “deporting immigrants convicted of a crime and detaining and deporting immigrants caught crossing the border illegally — would amount to a significant increase in deportation. An estimated 11 million immigrants are in the country illegally.” (Donald Trump says Illegal Immigrant ‘have to go’” 1) The post continues to state that “only 31% of republicans believe that trumps idea of cutting down on illegal immigration will be fulfilled in its entirety.” (Donald Trump says Illegal Immigrant ‘have to go’” 1 ) This emphasizes the idea that congress does not believe that Trump has the power to deport immigrants.
