To be precise, one in five of 16 year-old drivers has an accident within their first year of driving. Some studies say that “the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16-19-year-olds than among any other age group.” In fact, 16 year-olds are nearly three times more likely than 20 year-olds to be in a fatal crash. Furthermore, the roads in Lebanon are mostly dangerous and non-executed as the law says. So this could put many lives in danger, especially young teens who don’t know how to fully cope if something happens while driving on these roads. And this would be granted when teens still rely on their parents to take them to places, and it would also contribute a certain control to parents on their children’s locations and whereabouts. It doesn’t mean that parents are manipulating their children’s lives, but it gives young teens a sense of being protected and loved, and this creates in the process some kind of feeling that children could trust their parents and could ask them for help at any time. This point is somehow related to teens that make rash decisions that could be prevented with the help of parent’s guidance. In Lebanon, most of the families are still united, and the legal age for driving plays a big role in doing so. True that experience is a great way to learn, but there are lots of other ways to learn without putting your life in danger, like learning from other’s mistakes and from other countries.
To conclude, teens shouldn’t be driving at the age of sixteen in Lebanon. As a matter of fact, teens at this age are still immature and take rash decisions, while most of the accidents today are caused by teenagers, and this would provide parents’ better guidance for their children.
