Donald Trump selected Betsy DeVos to be the Secretary of Education, critics have spoken about her lack of experience with public schools, her activism with school choice and private education has led many to believe she will strip funding of public school for private and religious school. In fact, Betsy DeVos was recently in a hearing with Democratic lawmakers and when DeVos was asked to commit to not work to privatize public school or strip a penny from public education, DeVos could not commit instead she answered "I look forward, if confirmed, to working with you to talk about how we address the needs of all parents and all students." We clearly understand that DeVos does not see education as a public good but as a private profit,

In order to resolve the differences, delegates from the majority of the states met at the Annapolis Convention in 1786. But they were not able to reach any agreeable conclusion. That led them to decide to meet again later in Philadelphia. In second convention, delegates observed that there is urgent need to frame an entirely new constitution. Some of DeVoss’ main views include privatization, religious education, and a “hands-off approach to accountability for public schools.” Betsy DeVoss was president of a program (before she became secretary) that gives vouchers to students in need so they may attend a private schools. Vouchers are where state dollars go to paying for a tuition at a private school. This program has faced constitutional problems in the past, main reason is that they direct public money to religiously based programs. In a scholarship tax credit program, however, the money bypasses state coffers altogether.…

DeVos has never provided a service to students. She has never been in the school, talking to kids and faculty, meeting with school boards, and finding solutions to their problems. She doesn't understand how closing public schools affects social and economic justice. Just a quick explanation, The U.S. Department of Education states that approximately 90 percent of grade school students are enrolled in public schools. She pulled millions of dollars of funding from public schools in Michigan to support private schools.…

The Dream Act is a bipartisan legislation and would permit certain immigrant students who have grown up in the United States to apply for temporary legal status and to go on to obtain permanent legal status and become a U.S. citizen if they attend college or the United States military. The Dream Act would also eliminate a federal provision that penalizes states that provide in-state tuition without regard to immigration status. Those eligible for the Dream Act would be illegal immigrants who came to the United States at age fifteen or younger as least five years before the date of the bill’s enactment. They would also need to have good moral character since entering in the U.S. in order to qualify for conditional permanent resident status upon a college acceptance, graduation…

When the Democratic Party platform committee met last weekend to discuss their party's principles, not everyone was happy with the draft K–12 education proposal that was presented. The problem, according to some public school activists? The plank was too positive toward privatization. According to The Washington Post, these activists criticized the party for using the same sort of language as corporate reformers, including offering limited support for school choice and test-based teacher accountability.…

Public school funding has been an ongoing issue for years. No matter how wealthy the district is, there can be an issue for all when the funds are not distributed fairly. Without enough funds from the government, schools cannot provide adequate supplies for the classroom, cannot provide sufficient transportation cost and cannot pay salaries to those involved in the school district such as teachers and administration. Public school funding also helps provide reduced and free meals to students who qualify. What a lot of people don’t know is where all of this money is coming from and who is paying for it.…

The public educational system began in the United States because it was seen as a way to help close the gap between the rich and the poor. Closing the gap between these two factions have become important for many people who are in the low and middle class because that way our country can build a community where everyone has a fair chance to gain income equality and the opportunity to receive quality education. However, privatization is disservice for some students who want to become successful as they are more focused on helping students who have a higher chance to succeed in the American economy. In Beilke and Morrison’s article, they state that within the “[public education] infrastructure of testing, tracking, and ability grouping- and its reliance on local (district) control- it guarantees that “the goods” will be kept in the “right” hands” (212). Putting students into two categories is unfair as it creates a boundary between students who do not do well in school and students who are doing fairly well in school.…

In Kandice Sumner’s Ted Talk, “How America’s Public Schools Keep Kids in Poverty”, she composes a well-constructed argument, concerning the issue of improperly and unequally distributed funding and resources to schools. Specifically, schools that are in low income and increased “colored” areas. Although I agree with her point of view that there should be a more structured and equally supplied school budget with necessary resources, I do not believe that the inequality is targeted to students of color and poverty –stricken areas. Growing up in a lower-economic and social class area, Ms. Sumner has the experience to speak for her community in saying that, “Because of this lack of wealth, we lived in a neighborhood that lacked wealth, and henceforth…
