The prophets depicted in the Hebrew Bible are said to have played a pivotal role in the history of the people of ancient Palestine. This is evidenced by approximately 30 percent of the Hebrew Bible is comprised of purported orations of or writings about the prophets (Stanley, 410, 425). The role of the prophets was to serve as intermediaries between deities and the people of ancient Palestine (Stanley, 416). This was important as one of the mechanism for the people to understand and connect with the supernatural world. They also were said to have challenged the monarchy regarding social/economic issues (Stanley, 417).
