The ones that were thought to be at this camp had some of the worst living conditions, they were beaten, starved, and even killed. They had intelligence of this since 1968. This camp was just 5 miles away from 12000 North Vietnamese Soldiers. BG James R. Allen was the Deputy in charge of the operations. Colonel Author “Bull” D Simmons was the Command for the actual group on ground. Colonel Simons recruited 103 personnel from interviews of 500 volunteers, most Special Forces personnel of the 6th and 7th Special Forces Groups at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. USAF planners selected key Air Force commanders, who then picked personnel for their crews. Helicopter and A-1 Skyraider crews were put together from instructors at Eglin and personnel returned from Southeast Asia. Two crews for C-130Combat Talons were assembled from squadrons in Germany and North Carolina. All were then asked to volunteer for a temporary duty assignment without additional pay and without being told the nature of the mission. 103 Army and 116 Air Force personnel were selected for the project, including ground force members, aircrewmen, support members, and planners. At 0218 on November 20, 1970, the helicopter carrying Blueboy successfully crash landed into the compound which was part of the plan, Blueboy was the assaulting force, they quickly eliminated the guards and secured the inside of the compound. About 3 minutes later Greenleaf landed a quarter of a mile away. As they left the helicopter they took fire from what was believed to be the Vietnamese Anti-Aircraft Artillery training Academy. Returning fire the Element moved to the barracks and killed 100-200 NVA and some believed to be foreign advisors which were Caucasian. Since the Greenleaf element landed so far from the objective the Redwine element went ahead and conducted Greenleafs part of the mission because they landed outside of the compound. After conducting a thorough search of the compound they found no items sensing that the Prisoners of War were ever there.
