Throughout the movie there are many specific examples of good vs. evil. The near perfect hero against his evil enemy is the plot of the movie but there are also many more. An example being when Buttercup, who also serves as a female figure, is first kidnapped by Vizini, Fezzik, and Inigo Montoya they are considered good against the evil of the pirate, who later we find out is Westley. Obviously Westley’s evil enemy is Prince Humperdink because he has taken his true love and all Westley wants is to get Buttercup back. Inigo Montoya’s evil enemy is Count Rugen, the six finger man who killed his father. The entire movie Inigo is on a quest, which is also a characteristic of a Medieval Romance to kill Count Rugen in revenge for his father’s death.
There are more quests in The Princess Bride because of all the different evil enemies and good vs. evil. Besides the quest of Inigo Montoya, Westley is also on a quest to get Buttercup back from Prince Humperdink so they can marry and live happily ever after. However, Prince Humperdink is also on a quest to kill Westley which is making it hard for Westley to get Buttercup back.
In order for Westley to fulfill his quest he has to overcome a couple of tests. The first is the Fire Swamp. The Fire Swamp is also a supernatural element because of its different characteristics. While Westley guides buttercup through the Swamp they encounter fire shouting out of the ground, oversized animal creatures, and very quick, quicksand. The second is the Pit of Despair. Here Prince Humperdink, with the help of the albino, uses a suction machine to try and kill Westley, but with the help of Inigo and Fezzik he overcomes death by using another supernatural element.
