Her eye sockets are deep and her eye color is black. The narrator describes her as “bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that pallid hue” (Faulkner 35). But it is her air of calmness through all her experiences that symbolizes death to me. And ironically in the end, her own death was only spoke of shortly by the narrator and without much description.
There is no doubt that death is the most important theme in the story “A Rose for Emily”. The story begins and ends with it. It is described in the physical aspect as well as in symbolism as well. But what makes this theme of death very interesting to me is the descriptive way in which William Faulkner establishes the tone of the story.
