The Poser is a novel written in four parts about the storyline of the impressionist, Giovanni Bernini. The first ten pages contain a scene out of chronological order where Giovanni is at the theatre he works at. He is talking to some co-workers before his act. The next three parts are named after the people who Giovanni meets throughout the novel that not only affect his life the most, but who he does impressions of the most during those periods of time in the book.

All of Giovanni’s life he has mimicked the actions and voices of everyone around him which is found odd to the people around him. So his mother gave comfort to Giovanni by telling him he is sympathetic to the bone and that can be hard to understand. Therefore, he does all he can to fit in with the world so he is not outcasted for his odd behavior. However, he struggles to find the thread of Lucy Starlight, a singer at the nightclub. Finding Lucy’s thread becomes his greatest mission, so he becomes deeply infatuated with Lucy and they develop a relationship. As time goes on, Giovanni’s act gets more popular and his relationship with Lucy becomes more serious. Eventually, Max plans a traveling show for Giovanni where Lucy will be the starting act. They celebrate the expansion of Giovanni’s act at Marguerite Harris’s mansion. During, Giovanni’s time at the party he discusses Lucy’s thread with his mother, Beatrice. Beatrice encourages him to do impressions of Lucy until he gets it right so he begins to mimic Lucy’s words and body motions during their imitate motions together. Lucy walks in during Giovanni’s act and is horrified and refuses to speak to him. So she refuses to be apart of Giovanni’s tour and then the whole tour gets cancels. After giving Lucy space Giovanni tries to talk to Lucy backstage, but finds her in the middle of an intimate moment with Benard. Giovanni is heartbroken and Bernard explains that he had relations with Lucy so Giovanni could move on to bigger and better things.
