The Pomegranate Tree In Hassan's Relationship

Decent Essays
The pomegranate tree represents Hassan and Amir’s relationship. When they were younger Amir would read books under the tree to Hassan and they spent a lot of time under the tree during their childhood. The pomegranate tree was alive and had pomegranates on it when Hassan and Amir were friends. However, after Amir came back to the place where the tree was many years later the tree didn't have any pomegranates on it, it was essentially dead. The tree represented Hassan and Amir’s relationship since Amir betrayed Hassan and there were no longer friends the tree didn't grow any pomegranates on it.

In the book the parent being the tree gives the boy unconditional love throughout the book never keeping count. So she gives and gives and gives, never expecting anything in return, never asking for anything back, and never reminding the boy of all she has given up for him. For example when the boy needs a house after already…

When Antonio realizes that spring is coming, the theme of his brothers changing and developing new, wild, bad urges is introduced. This is symbolized by spring and tree sap. The theme of the brothers’ life moving on is symbolized by many of the classically spring-like images. One example of this is how the “lime-green of spring came and… Dark buds appeared on branches.” Here, Rudolfo Anaya artfully shows how the color green, which can represent growth and virility, is being used to show that the brothers’ life is moving on.…

The tree will never be the same just as their relationship will never be the same. Even though the tree once stood strong in all its marvelous beauty, it is now split. What once stood so tall and strong is now been separated and each side of the tree faces different challenges. For example, the one side has to try its hardest to stay strong during the harsh winter season, this side, unfortunately, falls weak under the pressure of the cold linen blanket. Even though the tree is now two separate beings, it is still one “tree” for it is bound together by the strong roots that lie under the ground, together, even though it is broken.…

When Janie arrives home from her journey, her friend Pheoby goes to Janie’s house and Janie begins telling her life story to her friend whom she hasn’t seen in a long time.…
