In the Congo everything is different from the united states, like the clothes and beliefs and many more things. It’s been said that where you move to can influence the way you act and believe; and when Leah moved to the Congo, she becomes her own person instead of trying to follow in her father's footsteps. Kingsolver uses Leah’s moral traits to shape herself cultural, physical, and geographical surroundings that affect her character and change her whole life completely.

That changed her geographically because it's something she's never seen before and she just falls in love with it. The beauty of the jungle foreshadows her decision to stay along with the love of her life, Anatole. They are both very intelligent and helpful that they teach the village kids and help with farming and hunting. They both fall deeply in love with one another and get married and that changed Leah physically. Along the way, she has a child named Pascal and then she has 3 more. She stays in the Congo for the rest of her life with her family.
What changed most about Leah, is she matured physically. Instead of trying so hard to get the attention of her father, she starts to realize who she is. She is intelligent, strong, and a hard worker and she now knows that she doesn't need male approvement not even from her own father. Although she loses her religion she believes in world peace and that some things in life aren't fair. She knows that her ancestors owned slaves, so she showed a sign of sorrow,
