Throughout their adventures Toadvine serves as a mentor for the kid advising him on his actions. In the end of the book the violence puts a wedge between them and Toadvine is hung.
Captain White- Political radical that took it upon himself to fight against the Monroe Doctrine saying that Americans where conceding land to the Mexican savages. He recognized the Kids violent potential at the very beginning and exploited it in order to push his agenda. If it weren’t for him the Kid would have never been stranded in the dessert and captured by Mexicans. These circumstances forced the kid to join the scalp hunters.
Reverend Green - A preacher in Nacogdoches is speaking of a religious revival when the Kid arrives. He is accused of several crimes and is run out of town. His accuser, the judge, ironically accused him of such things only he is capable of committing. The Judge later admits that he never met him before further pushing the idea of him being evil.

Violence is necessary for the men to survive in an inherent violent world. In this world the strong eat the strong and the weak perish. This means that even if you are mentally and physically rough your survival is not guaranteed. This is seen when men like “the Kid”, Glanton and Captain White die. Because of this, these men depend on their brutal instincts to attempt to survive in the wicked west.
