The Pit and the Pendulum was a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe and published in 1842 in The Gift: A Christmas and New YEar’s Present for 1843 during a dark time in great writers lifetime. A stark and intense narrative, the story bears all the signature Poe themes such as (impending) death, paranoia, fear, fight for sanity, and the graphic depiction of physical and mental trauma set in a captive situation in a dark enclosure.
