Sometimes life throws many challenges and obstacles, but, it is always important to push through these obstacles and move on. In most of Poe's literature, the setting usually takes place in a dark, anxiety producing atmosphere. In the story “The Pit and The Pendulum,” Edgar Allan Poe uses a dark tone and mood to reveal a theme that no matter what situation a person is in, one should do whatever they can to get out of it, this is because one should never give up. Edgar Allan Poe is known for portraying a dark mood. He does this by using a dark setting. The narrator is located a dark room, throughout the story. This makes the story anxiety producing for the reader, because the suspense makes you not know what will happen next. “The blackness of eternal night encompassed me. I struggled for breath. The intensity of the darkness seemed to oppress and stifle me.” (Poe 3). The darkness in the room, creates a mood of how the narrator feels. He does this by showing that one should never give up. It is important to never give up because you never know if good will come out of it, a person needs to fight until the stress is over. “Free!-- I had escaped death in one form of agony.” (Poe 6) This quote shows that no matter how much agony and pain one is going through. Poe shows that one should never give up, the prisoner used every cell in his body to fight for his life, and freedom. “With a steady movement-- cautious, sidelong, shrinking, and slow-- I slid from the embrace of the bandage and beyond the reach of the scimitar. For a moment, at least, I was free.” (Poe 12). The quote gives a message, if you fight until the last second then you will reach freedom. Poe delivers the message in a dark way, but, it is still registered in the reader's mind. Poe shows that a person should never give up, in a situation of
