The Pigman Loneliness Essay

Between John, Lorraine and Mr.Pignati’s relationship in The Pigman, there were a lot of factors that altogether they overcome. However, there is this one factor that really stood out and in my opinion, was the main one. There were man vs man problems, such as John and his parents, who he refers to as Bore and Old Lady, John and Norton, Lorraine and Mother, etc. There were man vs environment, such as Mr.Pignati and society (negligence), Lorraine, John, Norton and Dennis(outcasts),etc. There were man vs self, such as Mr.Pignati and his loneliness, John and his bad habits, Lorraine and her insecurity,etc. There are more problems and dilemmas throughout the novel, but this one is the sole source of everything, It’s what started everything and ended everything. Due to Mr.Pignati’s loneliness, he wanted to have a relationship with the two for his craving of attention and it was due to loneliness that he misinterpreted John and Lorraine’s intentions. However, despite Mr.Pignati’s death, it didn’t go to a waste because like the author stated: “...he took his children with him....,” which meant that with Mr.Pignati’s death, John and Lorraine’s innocence also died. They were not their past selves anymore- they’re now mature. It really proves the fact that “Maturity is earned by experience and not with age.” The Pigman thoroughly explained how loneliness can hugely affect a relationship. I never imagined that a relationship so unpredictable can even be written out, but the main characters really brought out the better for each other. Reading how loneliness can affect a relationship, it gave me, the reader, the sense of how strong loneliness is.
