In ancient Egypt, the Pharaoh was the religious and political leader of the people. Pharaohs were the king or Queen of Egypt. Most pharaohs were men but some well-known pharaohs, such as Nefertiti and Cleopatra, were women. The most powerful person in ancient Egypt was the pharaoh. He was the head of the government and high priest of every temple. The people of Egypt considered the pharaoh to be a half-man, half-god. The Pharaoh owned all of Egypt. The pharaoh held the title ‘Lord of the Two Lands’ and High priest of every Temple. As 'Lord of the Two Lands' the pharaoh was the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt. Most of the people worked on the land and paid taxes to the pharaoh in the form of grain. To keep track of his revenues and to make sure everything was in order, the pharaoh had an army of scribes. They wrote using a script called hieroglyphics. The script was made up of little pictures, sometimes of the things they represented, or they were visual jokes of other words that simply sounded like those things. It took years to master the script sort of writing and it also took a long time to write anything down, so hieroglyphics were reserved for the most formal inscriptions.
