Outbreak at Watersedge Summary Brief Summary The online tutorial, Outbreak at Watersedge presented a case study regarding an outbreak at the Watersedge that affected the health of the people. There were increasing cases of people reporting sick, so the tutorial focused on figuring out the root cause of the outbreak. The public health care personnel started investigating by mapping out people’s location and their activities before they got sick.…
In conclusion, everything written above are all pieces of evidence that point to Emerald Estates being the source of the pollution causing algal blooms to grow in Lake Carson. Emerald Estates polluting the water needs to stop, and an action needs to be taken to prevent the algal bloom from growing even…

The problem is compounded by the inability of conventional water treatment methods to remove the toxins from the lake. Several factors have contributed to the complex problem facing Fernan Lake. Key among them is the impact of cultural eutrophication, which is the abundance of excess nutrients in waters that lead to excessive algal growth thus decreasing water quality as a result of human activities. Road construction, stream restoration, and agricultural activities have led to large amounts of phosphorus being added to the lake. This lowers the ratio of oxygen and nirtogen to phosphorus and provides cyanobacteria with an environment that they are uniquely adapted to thrive…
When algal blooms are prevalent in bodies of water, specifically bays, they can cause the nitrogen levels in the water to increase. When the nitrogen levels in the water are increased, this can lead to a number of detrimental health effects when consumed. In order to determine whether or not the salinity of the water in Barnegat Bay had an effect on the rate of the nitrogen levels increasing during an algal bloom, ten sample of water were collected and tested by adding the microalgae Nannochloropsis and recording the nitrate and nitrite levels every week. The sample of water varied in salinity, and two samples did not contain the algae to act as a control. The samples were exposed to a temperature of 22°C and were tested over the course of…

The status of Long Island groundwater, its biggest threats and contaminants, and the resulting problems. Long Island is especially venerable to groundwater contamination because Long Island’s aquifers are resident’s only water source. Development and agricultural use of the island have greatly contributed to contamination. The two main contaminators are: • Nitrogen (as nitrates)…

For example in July San Diego and Los Angeles broke records for wettest July ever and to set another example a bridge was destroyed by a flash flood in palm Springs and in San Francisco it was sunny all day. This is a really big problem because since the state’s most important reservoirs are in the North. Another problem is if El Nino arrives they may be too warm and the Snowpack would not be able build up. “We want the snowpack for sure” said California’s state hydrologist Maurice Roos. Another worrying thing is nobody really knows what will happen if El Nino storms hit the “Ridiculously Resilient Ridge”.…
Taking your boat on the water during the summer gives you a carefree outlet for relaxation and enjoying the great outdoors, but, over time, the bottom of every boat begins to accumulate algae as it sits in the water. This accumulation mars the aesthetic appeal of your boat and can lead to other issues. Understanding how to clean a boat properly is must for any boat owner and it should not be avoided until the problem is so severe that nothing short of a jackhammer will penetrate the grime. Boat bottom cleaning and boat hull cleaning often seem daunting, but if they are done on a regular basis, perhaps once or twice a season, depending on the frequency in which the boat is in the water, you can avoid the worst of the unsightly gunk for the…
Our help is needed to once again fix Lake Erie’s Blue-Green Algae problem! Since the 1960’s Lake Erie has had a thick sheet of Blue-Green Algae growing, threatening the lives of thousands of animals and humans that depend on it for fresh water and food. In the mid 1960’s Lake Erie was so polluted that TIME Magazine declared it as “ In danger of dying of suffocation.” The Cuyahoga River was so bad that it caught on fire multiple times, the Mayor of Cleveland declared war on pollution! It was described as “... a skin-like substance on the water’s surface, so thick that people could write their names in it.”…
Don’t be a victim be the person who helps lake Erie become it’s finest . Through the bad times of Lake Eries will it ever get better It has been forty years and nothing has changed in lake Erie . It all started in the 60s with the greatest algae bloom anyone has ever seen. The algae problem all began in the 60’s now this type of thing was not an overnight kind of problem, it took a lot of time to actually become a problem.…
When looking at all of the environmental disasters of the United States, the BP Oil Spill and Dust Bowl are by far two of the most devastating disasters to the surrounding environment and ecosystem. Although both natural disasters have different characteristics and environmental effects, each disaster greatly impacted the surrounding ecosystems from before and after the disasters. Although the Gulf of Mexico before the BP oil spill was still known for its suffering under the effects of coastal erosion, hypoxia or very low oxygen, and harmful algal blooms, the Gulf was still a flourishing ecosystems where plants and animals and even human industries thrived. Most of the marine life in the Gulf of Mexico included small animals and plants that…
The Great Lakes have been impacted in some good and bad ways. People have helped the great lakes number of chemicals and invasive species go down, they have built barriers to keep invasive species out of the Great Lakes. Pollution has impacted the great lakes. A way of pollution is from alwifes, alwifes die off during the spring which makes bugs come and eat them. The article says, “ Alewifes die off during the spring, Every year, tons of dead alwifes wash up on lake beaches.…
Fighting Back Against Water Pollution Water pollution needs to be reviewed as the increase in toxins in possible drinking water has increased in the last 20 years. Through the use of our technology and use alternative renewable energy sources, re-evaluating our usage and methods of disposing waste preserving both fresh and marine water in the United States. A common discrepancy that is brought up when discussing water pollution is whether the cost will become too large to even begin creating change, that the amount of resources required to implement could be used elsewhere for a more immediate impact. The discussion of environmental problems is a topic of many political debates, but throughout the years scientific evidence has documented the…
