The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Peer Pressure

Improved Essays
Peer pressure by definition is how different members of peer groups influence each other. These pressures take hold when we choose to adopt these new behaviors. Although we learn at a young age to avoid these new pressures, it is still hard to identify the pressures and how to resist it. It is often even harder to admit and to identify the bad influences in one's life. That is where myself and Charlie from “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” begin to have things in common.
In “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” Charlie has several moments where he is faced with peer pressure from his friends. Not all peer pressure is bad, we can often even be influenced by good things and people. It’s all based on what we choose. Charlie, however, has been faced

I went through this pressure for a long time while I was friends with a certain guy. In the beginning of our friendship, he never tried to pressure me into doing bad things, but as our friendship grew and we got closer, he would try to get me to do things that I knew I shouldn’t. At the time, I had gone through a lot with the loss of a few family members and I was also struggling with having confidence in myself. This guy had been there for it all and I thought that he was always going to have the best interest for me, but I would later find out that he didn’t. When we were hanging out one night on my front porch, he offered me a cigarette knowing that I would most likely say no. He kept on asking me to just try it once, so I eventually gave in and tried it. I never thought that I would’ve given in to this pressure, but here I sit still smoking occasionally.
In conclusion, everyone will be faced with peer pressure in some form or another, whether good or bad. It’s up to the individual to know how to respond for themselves. In “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” Charlie didn’t know how to say no, so he gave into the negative peer pressure that his friends put on him. Just like Charlie, I struggled with how to say no to a person that I had been friends with for a long

Peer pressure is social pressure by members of one’s peer group to take part in a certain action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted. Brian was subjected to peer pressure when he decided to take part in smoking marijuana with the rest of the group even though he initially said no. Another instance of peer pressure is when the group discussed sexual experiences. Claire did not want to talk about her intimate experiences or lack thereof. However, the group pressured her and informed her to “just say it” and she complied.…

In the text Zinsser identifies four kinds of pressure: Economic pressure, Parental pressure, Peer-pressure, and Self induced pressure. Zinsser’s claims about the college pressures students face are very accurate and relatable, not to just one student or an abundance of students… but all college students. Most people find it easier to rely on others and to be a social conformist rather than being a social non-conformist. Being a social conformist is easier because you do not have to explain why you want to be different or why you refuse to give in to peer pressure. People tend to find it easier to deal with peer pressure if they follow the crowd. When undergoing peer pressure, a lot of the time it is easier to do what others do instead of having to explain yourself. In Lord of the Flies, at first everyone followed Ralph because he was the one who blew the conch and no one seemed to care about Jack’s opinion, so Jack ended following Ralph as well.…
