In our society people work hard through school and take the rigorous college courses most jobs require. For Jonas, the committee observes him throughout the years and makes a final decision at his “Ceremony on Twelve.” (Lowry 15-17) Some assignments are Birthmothers, Food Delivery, Instructors, and Director of Recreation. (Lowry 53,56) We have similar job options like those consisting of surrogates, delivery/mailman, teachers, and sports directors. Unlike Jonas and the others in his community they were given jobs like the examples, while the people in our society choose what they want to do and try to complete what is needed for this future. Another difference is we have the freedom to leave our current job and pursue a new one. The society in “The Giver” only has the people stay with one job. It is their assignment for life.
The society we live in gives us the freedom to choose how our families are,the jobs we work at, and how we want our government ran. The society Jonas lives in seems to take away these things we cherish. Since it is set in a time after our society the freedoms we have must have been taken away down the timeline. The difference between laws, families, and jobs may have very many differences but the small similarities make it possible to see our society in its
