What makes us who we are? That is the question. At times we wonder what makes a person be who they are. Primarily, several factors affect who we they are and the way people turn out in life. Such as family,culture, and life experiences. With an understanding of these factors we are able to answer the question, what makes us who we are?.
Family, is one of the many factors that go into making us who we are. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton Ponyboy’s gang is like his family and they affect who he is as a person. An example would be ponyboy smokes because most of the people in his gang smoke so he thinks it's ok. Additionally, Ponyboy keeps his hair long and greasy because the people in his gang are known for their greasy hair and are called greasers. As the story goes on Terry's father gets worse and Terry becomes embarrassed by his father and his behavior.This affects Terry's personality because he becomes selfish because he cares about how others see him rather than his father's condition. In another story about a father and son called “Von” by Janet Bode Vons culture affects the way he is. An example would be when he tried to get a job because he wasn't very good at speaking english because he spent a good amount of his life in vietnam that made him try harder and that turned him into the hard worker he is. Furthermore in the poem “dusting” by Julia Alvarez the speakers inspired to work hard to become “known” and not “anonymous” like her mother. In the speaker's culture the stereotypical family is the father working while the mother cooks and cleans while taking care of the kids and the speaker did not want that for her future. Also, the graphic novel called anya’s ghost by Vera Brosgol the character Anya tries to forget about the fact that she is a foreigner and that caused her to work hard so
