The Outsiders Compare and Contrast Essay There are many things people argue and share their opinions about, and this is definitely a subject that is involved with people's opinions. My English class just finished reading The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton, and we watched the movie right after. There were many major parts in the book were left out in the movie. While watching the movie it seemed rushed, it seemed the director and crew members were on a some sort of time limit. That is one reason why the book is better than the movie. The story was about a group of greasers, who are the “poor slums”, who get jumped or beaten up by a group called Socs, who are the “rich, tuff kids”. The overall meaning of the book is to not judge someone by what by what they look like or by how much money they have. The greasers live on the East side of town and the Socs live on the West side. The Socs always invade the greasers’ part of town. Johnny and Ponyboy are the main characters in the book and Johnny is short with longer hair, hanging down in his eyes, quiet, and is known as the gang's “pet”. Ponyboy is the youngest greaser in the gang and he is somewhat tall for his age, has brown hair (for half the book and movie) that is slicked back with loads of grease, and he wants to speak his mind but …show more content…
Also, while reading the book there was a better picture in my mind. For example, the church in the movie was nothing like the way the book described it. Ponyboy and Johnny didn’t fit the ages they were supposed to be. In the movie, Johnny looked as if he was 10 years old and Ponyboy look around 17 years old. In the film, Ponyboy and Johnny jumped into a stopped train where as in the book they jumped in a moving train. The church that was up on Jay Mountain wasn’t on a hill at all in the movie. Also, the movie started in a different spot instead of the same spot as the

But in the film, he began with Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally walking to the movies. The next difference from the beginning of the story was when Cherry asked Pony to go with her to buy some popcorn and drinks for the rest as in Johnny, Marcie, and the other two socs which also was a difference because those socs didn’t appear to talk to Cherry and Marcie. Next difference was inside the store to buy snacks and drinks there was happing an argument which wasn’t in the book as well. Third, difference was when Pony and Johnny were leaving to take Johnny to his house and both of them saw Johnny’s parents arguing. Which didn’t happen in the book, in the book Ponyboy and Johnny were at the lot before going to their houses.…

The whole gang of Greasers are all truly soft on the inside, but they never show it, except for Ponyboy sometimes. One example of Ponyboy being a caring person is when he and Johnny went into the burning building and saved the young school children from dying.
