The Outliers

So soft was the night, the silent patter of rain drips down the side of the house. It was a strange house, but not important enough to mention, no it was the property it was on that was the mystery. The secrets hidden on this ground, the battles fought, and the people who lived there didn't know a thing. This area seemed blessed by nature, it would seem. All plants grew here, all fruits, and a smell, of a mixture of cinnamon and fruit, tinging the air. The hidden stories this land has all began with a simple cat. The sun blazed on the summer day scorching the poor people who decided to go outside. Those who did go outside into this death trap, had been there long enough the heat didn't bother them anymore "Come

He needed to train it or something. Every time he opened the door, he always got out, usually ensuring an encounter with her. "Pasta come inside and get washed up for dinner" His grandma yelled out. He always hated that name. It's like his parents wanted him to get picked on. He got them to call him Pas instead. "I saw you on your way back from Mrs. Patterson's house, did Pete get out again?" she asked. " Yeah I got him though" He said slowly continuing the daily conversation. "We should really get the door fixed or a way to stop him slipping out." said Pas "Well did you at least talk to Megan for a little while?" "Um no she seemed busy" he lied. "Shame she's been trying to be friends with you for a while now Pas" she said knowingly. "Maybe we should ask her over to dinner sometime" She said intentionally making Pas uncomfortable. Shuddering at the thought, Pas went to the sink and washed up. He sat at the table for the awkward twenty minutes it would take him to finish his food and go upstairs. After putting his dishes in the sink, he went upstairs to take care of Pete. Pas slowly crept up the stairs to his room, thinking he'd leave the training for tomorrow. When he got to his room, he dropped onto his bed with a thump. "Hi Pas" Megan said. He leaped out bed, and backed away slowly. "What are you doing here" Pas halfheartedly said. Exit, Exit, Exit he thought to himself. "Your grandma invited me" Megan said. Of course she did. Still scanning the room for possible exits, he said "Well why are you here?" Pas said bluntly. "You don't have to be so rude" She said. She sat down in his chair next to the lamp."I wanted to talk about a mystery. Something to do with treasure." Slowly he sat down on his bed, Pete jumped into Megan's lap, and Pas began to

The morning breeze that was supposed to be inhaled with peace and be enjoyed with a glass of tea and some doughnuts around the dining table along with the loved ones, family, and friends just outside the small lovely house of two stories with flowers around its walls, running up to its roofs, was mixed with smoke and chemical odors that either left the heart of a living being in a state of unease or take its state of living from it, and left the house divided against…

Many people believe that success correlates with talent and hard work of an individual person. Contradicting this belief, Malcolm Gladwell states in his book Outliers: The Story of Success, that success is seized opportunities and advantages that only certain people get. Gladwell claims that advantages like social class, date of birth, family background, and luck is what determines the likelihood of success. Despite that he has strong evidence that supports these claims he overlooks the importance of hard work and dedication. In the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, she describes how she grew up in poverty and in a dysfunctional family that constantly moved around.…

Merriam-Webster defines success as the attainment of wealth. Society seems to agree behind this standard of success Most people believe success only pertains to money or has to be some grand achievement. However, wealth does not always equate to money. A student could finish a project two weeks prior to a deadline and deem that achievement a success. Success is an ideal measured by the individual.…

It was a night like most others in the abandoned ghost town. All I saw was darkness and shadows creeping around every corner. I heard the howls of coyotes and the hooting of owls through the midnight air. The whistling wind rang the rusty, wind chimes dangling from the old run-downed mansion. The sign above read “Muddy Creek Manor”.…

Some people believe that we can succeed with our own control, while others believe that succeeding is due to their natural ability. Two authors David Epstein and Malcolm Gladwell both have different perspectives of the two sides. The Sports Gene, by David Epstein, states that innate talent has an advantage over practice. The Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell concludes that preparation is more important than innate talent. Gladwell's argument, that people's motivation and practice lead them to achieve is stronger than Epstein's claim that innate talent leads to success.…

Mojos As I went to Mojos I choose to sit outside on the deck for a little while. The deck had three black, steel tables on it with four chairs at each table— which probably was not a smart idea to sit on since it was absolutely hot outside. Louis was almost too fixated to notice that Harry had sat down on his mattress opposite Louis. The green eyed lad just sat there for a moment, every now and again his mouth opening, then shutting again as if trying to spit out the words which were obviously on the tip of his tongue. “Do you want to talk about what happened? I’ve heard that talking through things makes it better, we could try that?”…

Malcolm Gladwell's, “Outliers: The Story of Success” illustrates the illusion and the blind luck of the “self-made man”. The idea of the self-made man has been alive and well in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of people immigrate to the U.S. every year on the dream of a new life full of opportunity and subsequently, success. What Gladwell argues is that there is never any success without ample opportunity. There is no such thing as a real self-made man.…

    Emma Donoghue Analysis

Setting her novel in a confined location Emma Donoghue opens it up to various interpretations on various grounds. Since it is the story of a young woman who has been locked against her will and is sexually abused at the hands of a man repeatedly one may simplistically view it as a tale of female subjugation and masculine oppression but that would be blatantly disregarding all the other issues simmering beneath the surface that might not be obvious at first sight. By focusing not only on the captive woman but also her five year old son Jack, even making him the narrator of her novel, Donoghue enables her readers to view the same situation from two varying perspectives. While Ma longs to escape the claustrophobic confines of the room that has…

Reconciliation Interrupted by the faint sounds of birds chirping and grass swaying in the gentle breeze, the calming silence became a distant memory. As the birds flapped their wings, moving at the edge of the tiny meadow, from one tree to the next, they cast their shadows over the body of a small brown skinned, black haired girl. She lay on her back in the hilltop grass, facing directly up towards the almost blinding light of the afternoon sun. Her dark skin, holding a lively warm glow, reflected the rays of sunlight off of her quickly flickering eyelids. Suddenly, they were open, revealing her dark brown almond shaped eyes and her ever so slightly off white sclera.…
