World War II Effects on Children
“We were more or less frightened all the time” Liv Reidun Storaker. World War II was a global war that took place during 1939-1945. Most of the world’s countries that were involved or fighting fell into either the Allies or the Axis powers. The countries that are in the Allies power are Russia, France, British Empire, United States, Rumania, Serbia, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, and Montenegro. The countries that are part of the Axis power are Italy, Germany, and Japan. This war was a total war meaning all the resources a country had went to the war. More money was spent on this war along with more death. With a total of 50-70 million deaths in this war. Children saw things from a different perspective than adults. They were either too young to understand or knowledge of the war was withheld from them. A child who lived in a country that was either occupied or attacked had different experiences than a child who did not.

She lived in England and was 13 when it started. Before the war she lived in Stoke Newington North East London. She had four brothers, three of which enlisted in the service and one was younger. She went to school every day on a scholarship and attended North London Collegiate School which was an all girl school. When the war started she always carried a gas mask, this was required at all time. She was evacuated three times during the war and the first time was a few days before war actually started. No one really knew where they were going and she took it as an adventure. Maureen had a very positive outlook on the war. She did go back to her home when she was evacuated to visit her parents. She also was home during for part of the Blitz. She remembers a buzz bomb had landed in her lawn and her brother had to yell at
