Two Different Essays by Two Different Black Authors: Two Incredibly Different Choices One hundred and four unarmed black people were killed by the police in 2015 (Mapping Police Violence). Not surprisingly, the most recent killings of unarmed blacks by police have black people protesting and rioting across the country. At this critical time of racial unrest, words imploring racial harmony must be found. Searching for an author seeking racial togetherness, I analyzed Kiese Laymon’s essay, “The Worst of White Folks,” from his book How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America: Essays and Claude Steele’s essay, “At the Root of Identity,” from his book Whistling Vivaldi: And Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us. As my analysis will show, although Laymon’s essay and Steele’s essay bear technical similarities, the differences between them are pronounced; one preaches racial divisiveness…

As a young 13 year old in 8th grade, I was not expecting a reading teacher to once had been a rapper. As a teacher, his name was Mr. Hill but as a rapper, his name was Killa C. Everyone in 8th grade heard about him being a rapper before the year even started. His music seemed to be sort of devil worshipping and not true to his life. If I must say, it was stunning to see downtown Billings in a music video.…

In “Red Skin is a Bad Name” by Baxter Holmes, and “Redskin is Not a Bad Name” by Daniel Snyder, the two discuss their two different views about the NFL’s “Washington Redskins”. Many, including Baxter Holmes, believe the name “Redskins” represents a derogatory word for the Native American indians. Holmes clearly states how the name represents the Phips Proclamation in 1755 where many people were paid to kill Native Americans. Meanwhile on the other hand, many biased supporters such as Daniel Snyder and many of the Redskins fans believe the team’s name symbolizes Native Americans in a positive way, describing the name as a “pride” to Native Americans despite the fact about what the name symbolized in the past. Although Snyder claims that there…

The ‘graffiti wars’ say about social relations of inequality and power in cities is that power of the city is in the hands of the government and those higher in power. They are the one who want to have control over what rules public space and what does not. Officials have the power to put up private corporate advertising but choose to label public graffiti as disorderly or criminal. Graffiti challenges this social order and it is those from below with lower power and faced with multiple inequalities such as race, age, social class, such as impoverished black youth and the like, that are taking back their cities and expressing urban hip hop culture, just as seen by black and hispanic urban youth in the film Style Wars (quote). It is a tool to…

One group that I would definitely and without a doubt have a problem protecting their right is the white supremacy group. This group believes that they are superior to all other races and cultures. The white supremacy group promotes oppression and racism. They do not respect people that are not of fair skin color, blue eyes and blonde hair. Their ideology preaches that everyone outside of their group are second class citizens and does not deserve the same rights.…

The definition of race, and racism, as a ‘scavenger ideology’ stems from the concept that it ‘borrows’ definitions and applications from anything that the ideology can be meaningfully tied to. The concept of ‘race’ draws elements from social constructs such as xenophobia, religious bigotry, nationalism and essentialism; as well as pseudoscientific ‘strains’ of anthropology, biology and eugenics. The basis of a ‘scavenger ideology’ is to be adaptable and versatile by picking up, or abandoning, previous values from social, economic and political cues in society, rather than a strict set of unchanging values. These values are then implemented within the society, to the advantage of the dominant class, as the definition includes or excludes individuals…
