“The Necklace” is a short story written by Guy de Maupassant. Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5, 1850, at the Chateau de Miromesnil, France, he was a French writer whose literary work is very well known. Maupassant’s literary career started in the 1880s, just after he published “The Necklace”. Despite he was a very well known writer, Maupassant never married, mostly because of his fear of being abandoned as he was by his father. As he grew older, Maupassant became more withdrawn and obsessed with death, and he was institutionalized after he tried to kill himself in 1891. He died two years later, on July 6, 1893. The quote demonstrates that they were very worried, and that they tried to find a replacement as soon as possible, but they weren’t lucky, that’s why Mathilde is very dedicated, she tried her best to find another necklace. 2-Maupassant describes how ashamed Mathilde is of herself because she lost the necklace she borrowed from her friend Madame Fostier.
