According to Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), Nature is everything which a man brings with himself to the world while Nature is every influence that affects him after birth. The nature versus nurture debate has been a controversial issue and it can be traced to about 150years ago. In 300BC some philosophers questioned nature vs nurture in human behaviour. A Greek philosopher named Plato (428 BCE – 348 BCE) believed that our morality and IQ is inherited. Aristotle (384-322BCE), another philosopher claimed that all that a human has is not innate, but comes about as a result of external experiences. Many experiments carried out has shown both genetics/heredity and the environment plays important roles. The experiment performed by Marla (1996) showed that even though the birds had it in them to sing until the environmental factors were put into place, they were not able to fully manifest their singing behaviour. Also Harlow (1958), Bowlby (1952) attachment theory also show strongly how nurture is important to personality and also how it is the nature of both human beings and animals to behave in what we term “normal” when nature interacts with nurture to produce behaviour.
