Darkness How does a parent help a teen with suicidal thoughts? Aside from the normal pressures of teenage life, certain circumstances can make teenagers contemplate suicide. Suicide is deliberately taking one’s own life to solve a growing problem that at the time feels insurmountable. A teenager with an already fragile ego may find themselves hopelessly thinking that suicide is the only answer. Over the more recent years studies of suicide have been taught at high schools worldwide to educate and inform that suicide is not the answer. The custody battle is not only exhausting and stressful for the parent, but for the teen as well. If the parent that was physically or mentally abusive won custody, the teen could feel it wasn’t fair and fall into depression. Unresolved abuse as a child can follow them into their teen years. Many teens try to cover up the problem by abusing drugs or alcohol. Uncontrollable events like moving or a serious illness can take the teen out of their comfort zone and drive them to depression. Teen suicide can be triggered by a variety of causes. Talking with teens about their feelings like grief, resentment, hurt, and guiltiness; could relieve the pressures they have. Realizing the warning signs before it’s too late could help prevent suicides and result in a lot more saved lives. By working with teens we could give them a sense of belonging and instead of feeling like a financial burden to society. With a safe outlet they are less vulnerable to emotional changes and will feel more self-sufficient. The same pressures and feelings that adults go through apply to adolescents as well. Helping teens with long term goals or passions could help them to persevere through the obstacles that life has for them. Having teens understand that sucide is not an option could prevent the suicidal thoughts that flourish in isolation.
