The central idea in Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” can be various but one strongly noted in the short story is to seize the moment of happiness. Both Calixta, Alce, and Clarisse where noted for. Calixta and Alce seized the moment of happiness being intement with each other knowing they were both in a committed marriage. At the moment both did what they wanted and accomplished their needs however unaware of the risks or the aftermath. Clarisse seized the moment of happiness by staying longer away from her husband. At the end of the short story everyone was happy.
I don’t agree with what the story says. When Calixta and Alce seize the moment of happiness, it’s observed that there is nothing wrong with having an affair. That is noted how Calixta and Alcee cheat on their spouse and act as nothing ever happened. They both at the end of the affair are kinder to their spouses. Once I realized what the couple was talking about it changed the whole aspect of the story to me and became a real sad story. To read how Jig was in a burden to have abortion just to hold her relationship together. As stated in the story, “Then what will we do afterward? We’ll be fine afterward. Just like we were before. What makes you think so? That’s the only thing that bothers us. It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy.” It was sad to note that she wanted to keep the baby and was scared to proceed with the surgery but at the time the baby was unwanted by her partner.
