Jerome's family struggled to support themselves. His mother worked at home and sold homemade blankets and quilts while his father would go to work at the scrubber plant. The scrubber plant was one of the ways they were using to accelerate the pollution clearance. Basically, it's like a giant water filter for the air. Air would get drawn in from high up and would get forced through a screen that would catch the carbon dioxide and other nasty materials releasing fresh air.
