The Modern Ice Age

It's the year 2134 and the world was enjoying the longest period of peace that began back in 2073. That was the year a new mining method was discovered which made getting minerals, metals, and other resources very easy however that was way before Jerome was even around. The world had changed a lot since then and would probably never be the same. When the new method of mining came about no one knew just how bad the consequences would be. The new mining method made it possible to drill deeper than ever was thought possible; however, the effects of this was that the core of the earth was slowly starting to cool down. This coupled with the massive amount of fuel required to operate the machines which hastened the pollution in the atmosphere began what would soon be called the modern Ice Age. This was discovered about twenty years before Jerome was born and scientists realized the problem too late to have any chance at reversing the effects before the Ice Age arrived.

Jerome's family struggled to support themselves. His mother worked at home and sold homemade blankets and quilts while his father would go to work at the scrubber plant. The scrubber plant was one of the ways they were using to accelerate the pollution clearance. Basically, it's like a giant water filter for the air. Air would get drawn in from high up and would get forced through a screen that would catch the carbon dioxide and other nasty materials releasing fresh air.
