The strongest, and perhaps most reflective, representation of the domineering maternal figure is exhibited through the Witch’s character. The witch is involved with every main character in the story as an antagonist. It is a very unique choice to make the Witch both the most maternal figure in the play and the antagonist. While it follows most fairy tales in this way, Sondheim seems to have modeled her explicitly with his view of his own mother. The Witch and her daughter, Rapunzel - “the fruit of an Illicit Union with a roving neighbor who abandoned her” - have such a significant arc in their relationship from beginning to end.…

Satire has existed as long as the establishment of politics and government. As an ingenious satirist, Twain’s works has built the foundation of how most Americans approach and utilize satire today. His intentions with satire as a tool sought for ways to display the portrayals of issues he personally dealt with in his life. Twain took aim at what he saw in ability to write his novels, short stories, and essays in poking fun at America’s failings with gentle ways, and other times through darker and pointed ways. He often ridiculed the hypocrisy and stupidity shown from his time including close-minded small towns, religious hypocrites, and dishonest politicians, as well as slavery and imperialism.…

The author of “The Prince and the Pauper” develops theme in many ways. The author develops the theme by using plot, characterization, word choice, and point of view. The theme of truth is not always visible to others is shown in by in the inciting incident, the guards would push away the prince because he was wearing rags. Another way the author shows theme is through characterization, by describing the characters similar appearance between the prince and Tom Canty to show why people don't believe that the prince is the prince and Tom is Tom. One reason why the theme is the truth is not always visible to others, is in the text, it says, “Heavens, do you not see it?…

A major theme of Flannery O 'Connor 's “A Good Man Is Hard To Find” is what makes a person good. There is no clear answer, neither in the text nor in life. It is safe to say that a good person can be defined as one that is honest, kind, and always tries to do what is right. It is ironic then, maybe even a bit hypocritical, that the Grandmother is one of the most immoral characters in the story and yet she spends much of her time talking about what makes people good, judging others based on little to no information about them, and trying to convince the Misfit, a serial killer that just murdered her family, of his own goodness.…

Feministic Criticism Traditions have woven their way through society for generations whether it be simple family practice during the holidays, or cultural custom that have been passed down through centuries. Shirley Jackson is able to convey deeper meaning through the illustration of a corrupt tradition. Understood through the feminist view, both Gayle Whittier and Fritz Oehlschlaeger emphasize misogyny and the unfair treatment of women within the short story “The Lottery.” The patriarchal society is pronounced in the very first few paragraphs of the story. Right away, it is shown that the young boys playing ignore the call of their mother, but return immediately and without question to the stern demand of their father.…
